Developing Sites Rich in Antiquities

We have been told for generations that all of Israel's treasures are hidden in the Jewish minds. However, all over the world and especially in the more developed countries whose residents tend to travel more, Israel is known as the Land of the Bible and the Land of Jesus, and as a center for all monotheistic religions. Despite this tremendous curiosity about Israel's past, few sites around the country receive the exposure and development worthy of a tourist visit. Developing a tourist site is an expensive and complicated process, but the monetary and social contribution are well worth the investment. There are very few organizations which develop archaeological tourist sites; among them are several municipal entities, private entrepreneurs hoping to improve the attraction of their holdings, and public organizations. The Kedem team has specialized in different approaches for developing antiquities sites. Below is a description of the significant stages of the procedure:Locating Sites of Interest
The first step is to choose the site When confronted with several options, clear goals must be defined for the project, and the different options must be examined in accordance to these goals. Even in cases where the entrepreneurs have access to only one site, the suitability of the site must be examined to see if development goals can be achieved, even before the process itself is started.
Conceptual Planning of the Sites The process of developing a site begins with Conceptual planning conducted by a team of Kedem experts specializing in tourism, economy, architecture, archaeology, community, and more. At this stage the site's theme is defined, as well as the content to be exhibited in it. The environmental conditions are examined, the target audience of the site defined and the surrounding infrastructure examined: access, parking, water, electricity, sewage, etc. All these will be organized into a file which will then be used by the entrepreneurs to fundraise and to meet bureaucratic demands in the development procedure.
Fundraising and Resource Pooling The site developer's ideal is to work with a planner who is capable of allocating all the resources needed for developing the site. The biggest challenge in these procedures is fundraising, from all possible sources. Kedem's experts will assist you in locating possible sources for funding in order to advance the project.
Managing Community Projects Community archaeology, which has developed around the world in recent years, is a new pioneering discipline in Israel, and Kedem's team has experience in it since its beginnings. The community project provides a double advantage to the entrepreneurs, who are most often municipalities. It is possible to rely on the community's strength in order to develop the site, excavate it, maintain it, and raise funds for its development. Additionally, inclusion of the community empowers the commitment of the residents to their surroundings, their identification and pride in the site and settlement, and their commitment to protect the site, which is near to their homes, in the future.
Preparing a Plan (including conservation, reconstruction and general development plans) Kedem employs the most experienced antiquities site planners in Israel. We match an appropriate planner to each project, according to its characteristics.
Conducting Archaeological Excavations, Conservation, Reconstruction and Complementary Work Kedem has experience in conducting large scale projects at a wide range of sites. Kedem will carry out the necessary archaeological excavations in order to develop the site, as well as the necessary conservation and reconstruction works needed for the development process. Kedem can also serve as the main contractor, conducting all the necessary construction and development works.
Content Development and Preparation of Operational PlansDuring the first stages of the physical treatment of the site, content issues should begin to be formulated. Kedem's experts can prepare a “finds” file for the site which includes the site's database, its history, and the artifacts discovered in it. In addition, Kedem's experts can develop a design concept for the site and consolidate an operational plan for it. The site can thus become operational after the conclusion of the necessary development work.
